Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic, public speaker and Canadian. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency an online platform that hosts videos and commentary analyzing portrayals of women in popular cultural. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, journalist and award-winning feminist for more than 10 years. She is the author as well as the executive director for Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit website which explores the portrayals of women's roles in popular culture narratives. She's determined to dismantle stereotypes of women and the way they are depicted in pop culture. She also is working to increase awareness about the online abuse directed towards women and marginalized groups of people. Sarkeesian is a graduate in social and political thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she's highly sought after as she has appeared at TEDxWomen XOXO and United Nations Broadband Working Group. As a child, Sarkeesian was fascinated by questions of gender identity as well as feminist theories. In her final year at university, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency web site. The woman with ambitions to create a web series on gender representation within video games, and was herself in the middle of a cyber-bullying campaign. The attack did not stop her from pursuing the project, and instead reinforced the determination of feminist critique of the media. As a result of the many contributions she has made to feminism, she is awarded numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and was the creator of Feminist Frequency which is an educational non-profit that explores women's representations in pop culture.
